How to Use the Marks & CGPA Calculator

This tool is designed to make life easier for students. Whether you want to know your exam percentage or convert your CGPA for a job application, it's all here. Here is how to use each mode:

Mode 1: Marks to Percentage

If you recently got your exam results and they are in raw marks, use this mode. Simply enter the marks you obtained (e.g., 450) and the total marks for the exam (e.g., 600). The tool will instantly calculate your percentage and give you a standard grade (A, B, C, etc.).

Mode 2: CGPA to Percentage

Many schools and universities (like CBSE) give results in CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) out of 10. If a form asks for your percentage, you need to convert it. Enter your CGPA, and select the formula. The standard CBSE formula multiplies your CGPA by 9.5. Our tool does this instantly.

Mode 3: Percentage to CGPA

Sometimes, you know your percentage (maybe from an old exam), but a college application asks for your CGPA. Just enter your percentage, and the tool will divide it by 9.5 (or your chosen factor) to give you the equivalent CGPA.

Why is Calculating Percentage Important?

In India and many other countries, percentages are the most common way to measure academic performance. They are used for:

1. Higher Education Admissions

Whether you are applying for a Bachelor's degree, a Master's degree, or a diploma, colleges have strict cutoff percentages. For example, a college might require a minimum of 75% in 12th grade. If you only look at your CGPA, you might not realize if you meet the requirement.

2. Job Applications

Many private companies and government jobs require you to fill out application forms that specifically ask for "Percentage of Marks in Graduation." Even if your university gave you a CGPA, you must convert it to a percentage to apply.

3. Scholarships

Scholarships are often awarded based on merit. A student with 90% or above might be eligible for a full scholarship, while a student with 80% might get a partial one. Knowing your exact percentage helps you apply for the right scholarships.

Understanding CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)

CGPA is a grading system used by many educational boards to reduce the pressure of marks. Instead of getting a score like 85/100, you get a grade point like 9.0. The CGPA is the average of grade points obtained in all subjects.

What is a Good CGPA?

Since CGPA is out of 10, here is a general idea of how it translates:

CGPA (Out of 10) Approximate Percentage (×9.5) Grade Description
9.0 - 10.0 85.5% - 95% Outstanding / Excellent
8.0 - 8.9 76% - 84.5% Very Good
7.0 - 7.9 66.5% - 75% Good
6.0 - 6.9 57% - 65.5% Average
Below 6.0 Below 57% Needs Improvement

The Formula: How to Convert CGPA to Percentage

Different institutions use different formulas. You should always check with your university, but here are the most common ones:

1. The CBSE Formula (× 9.5)

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India uses a standard multiplier of 9.5. This is because the board found that the average marks of students in a specific CGPA band were roughly 9.5 times their grade point.

Formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

2. The Simple Method (× 10)

Some universities simply multiply the CGPA by 10, assuming that a 10 CGPA equals 100%, an 8 CGPA equals 80%, and so on.

Formula: Percentage = CGPA × 10
