How to Use the Percentage Calculator
This tool is designed to make math very easy for you. We have three different modes depending on what you need. Here is exactly how to use each one:
Mode 1: Find X% of Y (What is 20% of 500?)
Use this mode when you want to find a specific part of a number. This is very common when you are shopping and see a discount, or when you need to find a tip at a restaurant.
- Look at the first box. Type the percentage number (like 20).
- Look at the second box. Type the total number (like 500).
- The answer will appear instantly at the bottom. In this example, it will show 100.
Mode 2: X is what % of Y (120 is what % of 500?)
Use this mode when you know two numbers and want to know the relationship between them. This is the exact mode students use to find their exam marks percentage.
- In the first box, type the smaller number (like 120).
- In the second box, type the total number (like 500).
- The tool will instantly show you the percentage. In this case, 120 out of 500 is 24%.
Mode 3: Percentage Increase / Decrease (From 1000 to 1200)
Use this mode when a price or value has changed and you want to know how big the change is. For example, if your salary went up from 30,000 to 36,000, you can find out the exact hike percentage.
- In the "From" box, type the old number (like 1000).
- In the "To" box, type the new number (like 1200).
- The tool will tell you if it is an increase or decrease, and by what percentage.
Why Do We Need a Percentage Calculator?
Percentages are everywhere in our daily lives. Without a basic understanding of percentages, it is very easy to lose money or make a mistake. Here are some of the most common ways people use this tool:
1. Shopping and Discounts
When you go to a store, you often see signs like "Flat 40% Off" or "Buy 2 Get 1 Free". Using the first mode of our tool, you can quickly find out exactly how many rupees you are saving. For example, if a shirt costs 1500 rupees and there is a 40% discount, use the calculator to find out that you will save 600 rupees.
2. Calculating Exam Marks
Students often struggle to calculate their percentage manually. If you scored 450 out of 600, it can take time to figure out the percentage by hand. Using the second mode, you just put 450 in the first box and 600 in the second. You will instantly see that you scored 75%.
3. Understanding Salary Hikes
When you change jobs or get a promotion, the company might offer you a higher salary. But how much more is it really? If your current salary is 5 Lakhs and the new offer is 6 Lakhs, you can use the third mode to see that it is a 20% hike. This helps you negotiate your salary better.
4. Business and Profit Margins
Shop owners and small business owners need to calculate their profit margins. If they buy a product for 800 rupees and sell it for 1000 rupees, they can use the third mode to see that they made a 25% profit on their cost. This is very important for running a successful business.
5. GST and Taxes
In India, we pay GST on almost everything we buy. If a product costs 2000 rupees and the GST is 18%, you can use the first mode to find out that the tax is 360 rupees. This helps you understand exactly where your money is going.
Simple Math Behind Percentages
The word "percent" means "per hundred". So, when you see 20%, it really means 20 out of 100. If you want to find 20% of a number, you just need to divide the number by 100 (to get 1%) and then multiply it by 20.
For example, if you want to find 20% of 500:
- Divide 500 by 100 to get 1% = 5.
- Multiply 5 by 20 to get 20% = 100.
But our tool does all of this math in milliseconds, so you don't have to worry about the formula. Whether you are calculating a small discount or a large business profit, the answer is always accurate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between percentage and percentile?
Percentage is a number out of 100. For example, 80% marks. Percentile is different. It tells you how many people you scored higher than. If you are in the 90th percentile, it means you scored better than 90% of the students. This tool calculates percentage, not percentile.
How do I remove a discount from a price?
Let's say a shirt costs 2000 rupees and has a 30% discount. First, use the "X% of Y" mode to find out that 30% of 2000 is 600. Then, subtract 600 from 2000. The final price you will pay is 1400 rupees.
How do I find the original price if I know the discount?
If you buy something for 700 rupees after a 30% discount, it means you paid 70% of the original price. To find the original price, you would need a different calculator (Original Price = Final Price / (1 - Discount/100)). Our tool is mainly for finding the percentage itself.
Can I use negative numbers in the calculator?
For the first two modes, you should use positive numbers. For the third mode (Increase/Decrease), if the new number is smaller than the old number, the tool will automatically show a "Decrease" percentage.
Does the calculator work on mobile phones?
Yes, the website is fully responsive. It will look great and work perfectly on any Android phone, iPhone, tablet, or laptop.
